Kalem is a small community located in the central section of Scott County, just east of the town of Morton, Mississippi on U.S. Highway 80. Kalem once was also known as Concord, a old settlement named after the Concord Methodist Church that was one time located there.
Established in 1879, Raworth was a sawmill town with several stores and a water tank stop for the Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad. After the timber was exhausted, the stores were abandoned and later the entire settlement with the exception of one house was destroyed by fire. With the decline of Raworth, located two miles east of Kalem’s current location, the Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad moved it’s water tank to this site in 1911, where it became a flag and water tank stop and was named Kalem by Caley Regeans, a railroad man and early settler.
At one time Kalem was well known for its corn, cotton, peanuts, sugarcane, potatoes, and other vegetables. Today its economy relies on chicken houses, cow pastures, and the Kansas City Southern Railroad, now known as the CPKC Railroad. Kalem is about at MP56.40 on the Meridian Speedway that runs through the community today. This shows how important railroads have been to Kalem’s history and present. History shows the railroad was completed through this section in 1858 and in 1861. Kalem has been listed as extinct since 1921.
